The Great Flood of 1953

Our role at Suffolk Archives is to preserve and protect Suffolk’s nationally and internationally significant archives, which represent 900 years’ worth of Suffolk’s history.

The Great Flood of 1953 had its 70th Anniversary at the end of January 2023. Although, we store and have collected archives relating to the Great Flood in Suffolk, we want to add to our collections the individual stories of people's experiences and memories of the events of those few days in 1953.

It is important that we help future generations to better understand the lives we lead and the environment that we live in. The impact of the climate crisis and environmental change will be researched for many years to come, so it is important that we collect people's stories and experiences of their relationship with the Suffolk environment in the past and now. Whether relating to weather events, changes in your own garden or your use of plastics - we need your stories.

We have set up an online survey dedicated to collecting your memories and experiences of the 1953 Flood in Suffolk here:https://www.smartsurvey.co.uk/s/SuffolkArchivesGreatFlood1953/
